Are You Letting Your Past Control Your Life Today
If you turn on the TV lately you will be sure to find several shows which chronicle the stories and struggles of people who are overweight. Whether it’s The Biggest Loser, My 600 lb Life or any of the other weight loss shows you will see that everyone has a story behind why they think they are overweight. You and I both know that as a society we are all guilty of placing blame on certain events or people in our lives.
“I’m overweight because I was in a bad marriage.”
“I’m overweight because I came from a dysfunctional family.”
“I’m overweight because…….”
No one ever says I’m overweight because I eat to much!
Really when was the last time someone said that? Let’s be honest here, we have all had bad experiences in our lives, whether its a failed marriage, the death of a loved one, being abused, depression, the loss of a job, we have all been there. No doubt that those events help shape us into who we are today, but do we really need to blame everything on those bad experiences?
Can we just be honest and say I’m overweight because I lack self control? I eat to much and I don’t exercise enough!
For myself I can look back and pinpoint when I started down the path of being overweight. I had recently lost a baby, got out of a really bad marriage and had to move back in with my parents. That’s when I turned to food. I admit I am a stress eater. I love to cook and bake, that’s a stress release for me, but when you cook it you usually eat it right? I know I do. But I refuse to use those bad experiences as a crutch. Yes, I can look back and know that those situations were a trigger for my habit but I refuse to say that those situations are what still causes me to over eat today.
So today I admit to you, yes I am overweight. I am this way because I eat to much and exercise to little. I let my sweet tooth and my addiction to food control my life. This year I vow to change that. I am working to have more self control and make healthier choices every day.
