I’ll be the first to admit that I do not keep up with pop culture and I hardly ever watch the news. So this morning when I turned on the Today show (my occasional guilty pleasure- and its not really “news” per se) I was in for a real treat.
Today anchors were discussing the performance by Miley Cyrus, another guy, the Twerking phenomena, and Will Smith’s family’s horrified reaction to it all. Of course, YouTubing the debacle was on the menu. (Isn’t there more going on in the world that could be reported on? Oh wait, it’s all about ratings.)
These people are being paid millions to behave like this? We give our attention to these “celebrities” who influence our children by modeling this behavior, allowing them to think its cool and normal? I’m shocked, embarrassed for her family, and am probably feeling some of the same things the Smith family were feeling having to sit there with her bits and pieces in their faces.
What a sad day in music history.
My daughter, who was sleeping away during this horrifying performance, will hear about it from her friends, see the monstrosity on multiple media outlets, and will be influenced in some way by it. However, the best I can do at this point is let her know that it is not ok to act like this, that her childhood idol is crying out for attention because her popularity is waning, and that I will ship her off to live with Nuns if I ever see dangers of this kind of behavior surfacing.
