Clean Eating in 3 Easy Steps
I know when you hear the words “clean eating” it sounds like a daunting, maybe even impossible task to undertake. But let me assure you, its not as difficult as you think & the extra effort is completely worth it!
A great place to start is reading your labels, try to shoot for no more than 10 ingredients on a label to start out, but over time focus on packaged foods having 6-8 ingredients or less.
Clean Eating Tip—Read Your Food Lables
I have 3 tips to keep in mind when trying to decipher your food labels:
1. If it has the words High fructose or hydrogenated on the label, put it down!
2. Watch out for sneaky sugars. Words that manufacturers use to try to get sugar past you are words ending in “ose”, reduced fruit juice & cane sugar are some major ones but a quick Google search of the ingredients in some things already in your cabinets is an eye opening experience. Those artificial sweeteners like Splenda & Aspartame should be avoided like the plague. Try adding a little honey to your tea, a little Stevia to your coffee, a little agave syrup or 100% maple syrup onto your pancakes. We all like a sweet treat, just be aware where it hides and you can plan a little treat once a week, once a month, or whatever works for you.
For example: Butter should include cream & salt, Nut butters should be the nut in question & salt, spaghetti sauce? Look for tomatoes, olive oil, basil, oregano. No extra sugars , no preservatives like maltodextrin, for example.
When making changes, be easy on yourself. Make small, sustainable changes over time and build on those changes. It doesn’t have to be a shock to your system to adopt a healthy diet, just some focus & dedication to getting healthier.
