Moving is a big job but preparing to move to a different state is a REALLY big job! For awhile now my husband and I have tossed around the idea of moving to Tennessee. (Yes a UK fan in the heart of VOLS country….wonder how that will work?) He has a job offer down there, basically just waiting on him to show up when he’s ready. It will be a good opportunity for us both but the preparations are overwhelming.
Since right now I am the one that carries insurance on us both, we feel like I need to keep my job until he is able to get insurance through his new employer or until I find a job with insurance benefits. Applying for jobs when you are living in a totally different state is difficult. I often wonder if a potential employer looks at my Kentucky address and discards my application and resume because they want someone in that area. That’s where cover letters are extremely important. For each position I’m applying for I am attaching a cover letter, explaining to the company that I am relocating due to my husband’s job, and seeking employment. Of course the ideal situation would be for my company to have an opening where I could just transfer to a new location. But I’m getting tired of waiting!
On top of finding a new job we are trying to find a new place to live. My husband will be working in Knoxville, but we would prefer to live in one of the smaller communities outside of Knoxville. However I am not totally opposed to finding an apartment with a six month lease and living there while we find our ideal housing situation. My husband, on the otherhand, is totally against apartment living.
So for now I’m spending a lot of time online, applying for jobs and trying to find housing.
Have you ever made a big move to another state? I’d love for you to share your tips with us. Keep following us as I will be updating our readers on my move.
