Moving is both terrible and enlightening. Terrible because, well, moving is time consuming and you have to lift heavy things like chests of drawers up stairs. Enlightening because you have to come to terms with how much stuff you’ve accumulated since your last move.
My year lease will be up in July and I am counting down the days. I am surrounded by loud college students where I live and for some reason my electric bill has never been lower than $150 in this apartment (when I’m gone 52 hours a week for work and am asleep at least 42. ) To say I’m ready to live in a house with a garage and a better heating/cooling system is an understatement. This place however served its purpose. Literally, it was found after only three hours of searching the Monday after I discovered The Narcissist’s infidelity. The carpet and the fresh coat of paint on the walls weren’t even dry when my things were carried in later that same night.
I am planning very carefully to make this upcoming move as hassle-free as possible by extensive legwork now. How? Ok, so right now my daughter is selling girl scout cookies. The troop leader knows I’m planning a move, so guess what? I already have about 25 moving boxes! The smaller boxes are perfect for packing cumbersome things like books. My goal this week is to pack up half of the books in our book shelves. Next week the bottoms of closets will be packed. These smaller boxes are also great for packing things in the closets that will not be used before the move like loose Christmas and other holiday decor in the holiday closet. I might even get pinteresty and cover the boxes with contact paper. (Hey, a few rolls are living in a closet. What else can I do with it?)
The Mrs posted an article not so long ago about organizing from dollar tree items. Their fold up clear plastic organization trays are awesome! I have been using them for drawer organization, so when it’s time to move, I just have to lift the trays out of the drawers and off shelves. This cuts back on cleaning out junk. I’ve done this with almost all of the drawers in the bathrooms and kitchen thus far. Now everything is neatly organized and in its place.
I’m also utilizing any container I can find for toys, ink pens, paperwork, laundry supplies, light bulbs, towels, bathing supplies, lotions…all of this will make my move as easy as a move can be.
My plan is to move all the little things and hire movers for all the furniture. No way will I recruit friends or my parents to help. Professional movers can do it quickly and in one day. It’s all about ease this next time.
Hopefully the day will come that I can settle into a house, and the days of moving will be done. Until then, I’ll be organizing everything I own anticipating the day I get to sign a new lease.
