My body is so confused right now, it doesn’t know whether its supposed to be asleep or still awake. I just started a new shift at work this week of working 2pm to 10:30 pm. Adjusting to this new schedule is hard. How does one get anything done when you work this shift?
For about nine months I worked third shift (about three years ago). I was like a walking zombie, back before zombies were cool. I didn’t know half the time what day of the week that it was. If it wasn’t for my cell phone and calendar I would have been lost all the time.
I would love to hear from other second shift or third shift workers about how you actually get things accomplished. Do you get up and take care of things before you go to work? Or do you stay up for a few hours once you come home and take care of things then? I know some things will have to be done before work, like going to the bank or post office, but what about chores around your house? Laundry in the morning? Or laundry late at night? How do you do it?
