Ok, so it seems like everyone is starting off the new year with juices, shakes, smoothies, and detox drinks. For our first Thirsty Thursday post we are going to take a look at some different detox drinks. I know, probably not what you had in mind for Thirsty Thursday right?
Last night I was browsing through Pinterest and decided to do a little search for detox drinks. Holy Moly! There’s a ton of them out there! How do you decide what to try first? It looks like you can detox just about every part of your body, or so it seems. This time of year many people are detoxing to jump start weight loss so let’s take a look at some weight loss drinks.
The first one that comes up the most often on Pinterest it seems, is the Cucumber, Lemon, Mint, and Ginger detox. I can tell you first-hand, I tried this one….been there, done that, won’t be going back! Yuck! It tasted like dirty cucumber water. Here’s the recipe:
10-12 Mint Leaves
Fresh Ginger Slices (more or less depending on how well you like ginger)
2 Liters of water
You slice the lemons and cucumbers and add that plus the mint and ginger to your water. Let it sit over night and Voila! a magical detox drink that claims to give you a flat belly!
I made some of this back in the summer and couldn’t get past the first glass. Like I said before it tasted like dirty cucumber water. Maybe you like it, but not me!
Here’s another one I’ve seen quite a bit on Pinterest and I’m actually going to try this one this week. I will let you know next Thirsty Thursday how it is. This Apple Cinnamon Detox water claims to boost your metabolism naturally with ZERO (yes they always put ZERO in all caps) calories. This recipe comes from Audrey over at Lose Weight By Eating.
1 Thinly Sliced Apple
1 Cinnamon Stick
1 2 Quart Pitcher of water
Drop your apple slices in the bottom of your pitcher then add the cinnamon stick. Cover with ice about halfway through then add water. Place in the refrigerator for one hour before drinking. You can even refill the pitcher with water 3-4 times without adding new apples and cinnamon.
Besides detox drinks you have other options if you are looking to lose weight. For the past couple of weeks I have been substituting my breakfast with a shake, or smoothie, or whatever you want to call it. I haven’t gotten back on the scales yet to see if I’ve lost any weight but at least I know I’m eating/drinking a healthy breakfast. I slice 1/2 of a banana, add 1 Tablespoon of Peanut Butter, and about 2 cups of Light Vanilla Soy Milk then mix it all up in my blender. Sometimes I even add a little protein powder if I want something chocolate. Its a fast, easy alternative to pre-packaged breakfast and weight loss drinks.
So now I must go in search of cinnamon sticks. I have a lot of spices in my cabinets but I don’t think I have cinnamon sticks. I will be making the Cinnamon Apple Detox tonight and I’ll be back next Thursday to give you an update. I’m hoping its better than the cucumber water! Wish me luck!
