Hello. My name is ~C~ and I have Career ADD.
Ok so that’s probably not a real diagnosis but I think it should be. Recently I was getting my hair done and was discussing with my stylist the fact that both of us have had several jobs in very different career fields. She described it well when she declared that we both have Career ADD (attention deficit disorder).
I spent four years in college with the thought that I would be a teacher. I then spent 5 years as a high school Family & Consumer Sciences teacher. After 3 years I was miserable and needed a change but it took me two years to get up the nerve to quit and walk away from the job that I spent years preparing for.
I left teaching with the idea that I would go back to school to become a nurse so I took a job as a Nurse Aide. I did that for about a year but the low pay, back breaking work and the fact that I was working third shift led me to search for another job. I just don’t deal well with third shift work. I was like a zombie all the time.
So from there I took a position as a trainer in a call center. I was actually putting my college degree to work and I really enjoyed it. The downside is that call center jobs are often temporary. I needed something steady. It’s hard to make plans for the future when you don’t know how long your current job will last!
As part of the call center job I was able to get my license as an insurance agent so I tried my hand at selling insurance for a bit. Sales work is not my cup of tea!
But the good thing is the insurance experience has led me to my current job which I love. I work in a hospital and help individuals without health insurance find funding sources to help pay their medical bills.
I guess one could say that I suffer from Career ADD or maybe that I’m just a well rounded individual but then again maybe I just don’t know what I want to be when I grow up!
