It’s beginning to feel like fall here in Kentucky. We’ve actually been able to turn out air conditioner off the last several days! Yay for lower electric bills!!
I have been itching to go buy some mums and fall decorations. At our new house we have a big front porch that just begs to be decorated!
I always seem to wait to late to buy fall decorations. It’s like I buy these mums and the blooms only last a couple of weeks. So this year I was determined to decorate early. Everyday on my way to and from work I pass this store that has mums set out in front of the building, for sale. Everyday I keep thinking, “I need to buy some mums”.
So yesterday I hopped in the car and headed for the store, hoping I would not see anyone I know (which is a hard thing to do in a small town). As my friend would say I “looked like a varmit”, with second day hair and no makeup, I was hoping to get in and out without being seen!
Of course once I’m in the store I run into one of the girls that I work with. I told you it’s near impossible to go out without seeing someone you know in this small town!
But, I did manage to buy two big pots of mums. I decided to buy ones that had not bloomed out yet so that they will last longer than ones I’ve bought in the past. The only problem is I have no idea what color these will be.
Once I got them home and arranged on my porch steps I realized exactly what I needed to do to jazz them up a bit. I had a stash of old burlap bags in my garage so I cut off two strips of burlap to cover the plastic flower pots. Let me tell you, burlap is messy! I was wearing a pair of black yoga pants and by the time I was done I was covered in strings of burlap!
I used a piece of clear packing tape to hold the end of the strip of burlap onto the flower pot while I wrapped it. Once the burlap was covering the plastic flower pot I took a length of wire mesh ribbon and tied around the pot. I didn’t mess with a big bow or anything. I wasn’t feeling THAT crafty! I had to adjust the burlap a bit to make sure it came all the way to the top of the flower pot. There was about an inch or two of extra burlap at the bottom of the pot so I just tucked it up and under the flower pot.
Now all I need are some pumpkins…and some blooms on these mums!
