Maybe you’ve seen the April Fools Jokes of “we’re expecting” which turn into the fact that they are expecting a check in the mail, a visitor, or something else but are posted to lead people to believe that they are expecting a baby and are pregnant.
Maybe I’m in the minority here but some of these Facebook status jokes are not funny.
Facebook Status & April Fool’s Jokes
Recently someone in my family (a very close family member actually) posted “I’m pregnant”. When I read the status update I had a feeling that it was one of these Facebook “jokes” but I wasn’t for sure. Personally I don’t think this is funny. Maybe to someone who has never tried to get pregnant, only to be disappointed month after month, this might be funny. But to me, someone who wants a baby extremely bad, but hasn’t been blessed with one, this is not a matter to joke about.
You may be reading this thinking, “geeze what’s the big deal? It’s just a joke, it doesn’t mean anything.” Basically, as Adventures of a Subversive Reader pointed out, if this is your defense, then you are basically saying “it doesn’t mean anything, your feelings don’t mean anything.”
I would like to tell you what “the big deal” is. Have you ever had a period in your life when you wanted something SO BAD that it hurt? Maybe as a child it was a toy or game that you wanted more than anything. Maybe you have your eyes set on that perfect job or that perfect spouse and everyday you find yourself dreaming of the day when you you finally obtain that thing you dreamed of. For many people the one thing they have dreamed of is the day they are able to have a child.
If you are one who thinks this “joke” is funny and you think we are over-reacting by not laughing along, then I pray you never find yourself facing infertility or loss of a pregnancy. I guarantee you won’t be laughing then.
