The other evening I had a taste of Maine at Claw Daddy’s on 128 North Broadway in Lexington, Kentucky.
For years and years I have yearned to go to Lobster Fest. Every year, something happens and I cannot go. As it turns out, I usually end up going on family vacation during that time, and I just can’t drag the kids to New England instead of the beach or Disney.
Lobster is one food I absolutely adore. The sweetness dipped in butter…just can’t be beat. Lobster Fest would be heaven. Vendor after vendor displaying their lobster fixin’ abilities. A dream come true!
Claw Daddy’s in downtown Lexington satisfied my lobster craving. You can see their menu here. I had the 12 oz bisque and a half lobster roll. They were VERY good. The lobster bisque was seasoned well, the base was sweet and mild as to not overpower the lobster in the bisque, and the lobster roll was soft, buttery, and had just the right amount of salt. One thing you can say for most restaurants that sell lobster is the freshness. It is a struggle unless they are boiling them live. Usually there is that telltale freezer taste. Claw Daddy’s lobster had a very fresh, just cracked from the shell taste that most place miss.
The only negative about this restaurant…the amount of food you get. Yes, the bisque is great. The lobster roll is great. But, the lobster roll is very small for the pricing. The 12 oz bisque was eight bucks. Not unreasonable, but I only found three smallish chunks of lobster at the bottom off my bowl. My half roll had only three larger pieces of lobster with a medium sized piece sort of filling the bun (which was a small bun.) Granted, I realize a this is a business and they are here to make money, and lobster is expensive even at wholesale. But…for an eight dollar bowl of soup, I expect more than three small pieces of lobster. At that price point, this place is doing really well nestled in their storefront on Broadway. (Their drink prices are marked up about 150% as well- my pet peeve with food establishments. May as well order a craft beer with your lobster roll.) Not a place to go if you are on a tight budget. Just from the location, one can count on that. However, it is a great place for people watching. The area is really funny…we are in Lexington, but you would think sometimes the college kids thing they are in Manhattan. Boutique bars, shops, trendy little clubs…makes me laugh.
Another complaint, and this is just me being picky, is the menu touts “Crab, lobster and shrimp- low in cholesterol.” Eh, maybe the lobster (61 milligrams per serving) and the crab (80 milligrams per serving) but not he shrimp which has approximately 166 milligrams of cholesterol per serving. Again, just me being picky. I can overlook this mistake in their marketing. Just an FYI, no one should have more than 300 milligrams of any kind of cholesterol in a day.
Aside from the small portion, I will get another lobster roll, and some bisque sometime in the near future. I’m excited to try Claw Daddy’s shrimp and crab rolls. None of the meat at this place has fillers, in fact, they state this on their website and menu.
All in all, i enjoyed the dining experience and plan to go again very soon. You should give them a try too!
