What do you use to wash your laundry? How much do you spend a month or a year to clean your clothes? Do you feel like you spend an arm and a leg on Tide or other name brands, simply to just wash them down the drain? That’s how I started to feel. Even though I am an avid coupon user who matches sales with coupons, the laundry detergent is a necessary evil, and can be a huge drain on your wallet.
How did I remedy this in our house? I started making my own! My blogging partner, C, posted a laundry detergent recipe she uses in her home, so I decided to post the one we use.
This recipe was obtained from a coworker at my day job, so I really do not know the original source. Instead of Purex crystals, I have started using the Gain Fireworks so my homemade detergent smells like Gain. Love that scent.
Four pound container of Oxy Clean Powder
Four pound box of Borax
Four pound box baking soda
Two pound box Arm & Hammer Washing Powder
Two bars Fel’s Naptha soap
Large bar of Zote soap- pink or blue
Large bottle of Purex Crystals or scented crystals of your choice
Mix all dry ingredients in a large container. Grate soaps, mix in well. Mix in Purex Crystals. This will yield approximately sixteen pounds of dry laundry detergent for about thirty bucks. If you use only one to two ounces per wash load, it will last several months! Feel free to add more or less of the Purex Crystals for degree of scent.
This is a great recipe! So happy I found it. Do you make or buy your laundry detergent? D you know exactly how much you save from using your homemade detergent versus a brand from the store?
